Huntsville Lacrosse Association - May 7th Notice
Huntsville Lacrosse Association
Hello and thank you for your patience in between our messages regarding our response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Many of you have reached out with questions about the season and what’s happening next? I will answer those questions to the best of my ability in this message so please read on.
2020 Youth Lacrosse Season…Cancelled.
Our last communication was at the beginning of April. Based on the situation at that time and trying to look ahead...we decided to try and offer a June youth lacrosse season. We had hoped the COVID-19 pandemic and the rules governing outdoor activities would have allowed us to begin practice May 15th and play games throughout the month of June. Unfortunately, as the events have continued to unfold, we are unable to support a June Youth Lacrosse season.
The HLA Board of Directors and Coaches discussed many options for continuing play. We looked at various ways to do something to get the kids out on the field but we were unable to connect the dots and the tough decision was made to discontinue the season. It was not an easy decision and one that we did not make without first exhausting all alternatives. In the end, player safety, family safety, other teams and associations cancelling their season, and current government rules and restrictions all added up to our being unable to provide you with a 2020 lacrosse season. I am very sorry to have to deliver that message and I hate not seeing our guys and girls take the field.
The Huntsville Lacrosse Association (HLA) understands that you have many options when it comes to playing spring sports. From Baseball, Softball, Swim, Track and Field, and Soccer we are glad that you chose to play Lacrosse! Lacrosse is an amazing sport and family. As such, we think it is very important to refund your player fees instead of issuing credits towards Fall Ball or the 2021 season. In this difficult time of uncertainty, we wanted to maximize what we are able to return to you.
Easier said than done……The HLA Board met and unanimously agreed that refunding player fees was/is the right thing to do…. However, the devil is always in the details. Complicating the refund conversation were the many different non-recoverable expenditures such as games played, practices, money spent to secure facilities, equipment, gear, administrative fees, official fees, US Lax fees etc. Each age group had differences in expenditures and that is reflected in the Prorated Refunds listed below.
The Huntsville Lacrosse Association will issue Prorated Refunds to our youth players just like we did for the High School Players. The 10,12,14U and Girls teams will all receive refunds for their player fees minus the non-recoverable operating expenses incurred by the Association. We have done our best to maximize the player refunds.
2020 Huntsville Lacrosse Association Prorated Refunds
10U Refund = $112 per player
12U Refund = $129 per player
14U Refund = $75 per player
Youth Girls Refund = $40 per player
- You will receive the refunds via check.
- The check will be mailed to the primary residence on file.
- Checks will be written and sent over the next week or two.
- Please be patient with the slow process.
Questions and Answers
We know everyone has questions and concerns related to the season and what happens next. To help address those concerns we will host a virtual Town Hall Thursday the 14th of MAY at 7PM to answer any questions you many have. During that session the HLA Board of Directors will answer questions about the 2020 season, provide a detailed explanation of where you money went and provide a look towards the future of HLA including our Return to Play plan for Summer Learn to Play Clinics and Fall Ball.
Thank you for hanging in there with us. We really wanted to give our players an opportunity to play and trying to put that together took some time, but in the end we just could not pull it off. Thank you again for being a part of our Association. To our coaches, parents, players and supporters we want you to know we couldn’t do it without you. Lacrosse in our area will continue to grow as new folks move into town and we want to be in a position to provide a place for them to play and we want to grow new players from the boys and girls across North Alabama. To do that we will be changing the way we run our association over the next few months. Expect to see new faces in leadership roles and new ways of doing things to better support the growth of our sport. We want nothing more than to share our love of the 'Medicine Game' with you all. The history, the excitement, the challenge, the camaraderie, and sheer fun of the game is infectious and what drives our passion. We want to share that passion with others, and we want you to be a part of it.
Thank you for your time and patience. I also want to say thank you for your words of encouragement during this odd time we are all living in. Please know that I am available to answer your questions and comments….so is the rest of the Board. We want you to continue to play lacrosse and we want to help share your love of the game with others.
Please join us on May 14th 7PM for our Virtual Town Hall. (Link and call in information to be sent out next week)

Huntsville Lacrosse Association - April 3rd Notice
Hello and thank you for being a part of the HLA family,
These are very unusual times and circumstances that we are facing. We hope you are making the best of your time at home and getting in a little wall ball or passing and catching in the backyard. Needless to say; The ever-changing situation and daily updates have made it challenging to make plans for the future of our lacrosse season. The HLA board has met (Virtually) multiple times since the beginning of this pandemic to put in place a plan of action.
Please read through this email message in it's entirety and let me know if you have any questions, concerns or comments.
Boys High School Season
The 2020 High School Lacrosse Season has been cancelled for high school.
Sadly, our High School Student Athletes have had their season cut short due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. For our Seniors and parents of Seniors, we appreciate and want to thank you for your time spent in our association, for your dedication to the players and coaches, for helping grow our organization, the time spent in practice and games, hard work and all the effort you brought to the game. We will miss seeing you on the field and wish you the best in your next chapter of life. Our final words of encouragement would be for you to give back to the next generation of lacrosse players.... Share your love of the game with someone new, get involved, help coach/mentor and never stop playing the medicine game.
High School HLA Fee Refunds
HLA will issue refunds to each High School player for the 2020 Spring Season. (checks will be sent to the parent and primary address entered during registration)
- BJHS Players will receive a credit of: $103.00 per-player
- HHS Players will receive a credit of: $109.00 per-player
The refunds are adjusted from your original $250 Player Registration Fee to reflect the 2020 expenses that were already incurred during the abbreviated 2020 Spring Season. (For the games that were already played, official fees, field use fees, non-refundable credit card fees, US Lacrosse Coaching Fees, Insurance fees, equipment and storage. The fees differ by team based on the number of games played and costs incurred). The remaining balance will be what is refunded to each player.
Girls Youth Sunday Practice/Play Sessions
All Girls Sunday Sessions have been cancelled and the players will receive a full refund. (checks will be sent to the parent and primary address entered during registration) It’s very sad to see this happen as we had high hopes for the growth of our girls program this Spring. Once things are back to normal, look for Girls Learn-to-Play Days this summer and more information about our Girls Fall Ball program.
Boys Youth Season
As the Covid-19 issue remains ever changing, the health and well-being of our families has remained our top priority. Because of that, we have postponed all HLA youth activities until further notice.
NOTE: This does NOT mean we are cancelling our spring season for 14U, 12U,
and 10U teams.
When will the season restart?
We are currently following all state and local guidelines resulting in the delay of our season. While we cannot predict what is going to happen in the coming weeks, we will continue to update you as more information becomes available. Note that our fields are controlled by parks and recreation organizations as well as school districts and we are in constant communication with them regarding potential field availability.
Why not just cancel?
There are several reasons not to cancel:
- We want to play!
- We have already spent a significant portion of your dues on non-recoverable expenses including: field permits, training, sports equipment, scheduling, etc.
- Kids (and parents) that are currently practicing social distancing will benefit from returning to some form of normalcy when it is safe to do so.
- Keeping the season going will help our local economy including small businesses, trainers and officials. End of year parties (at local establishments), officials, athletic trainers and others depend on supporting our sporting events and those folks are a critical part of a strong community.
What will the season look like?
Many ideas are on the table. We have a number of dedicated people working to develop a solution. We cannot know what is going to happen over the next few weeks and thus cannot predict the solution we will use. Once we know we will work aggressively and expeditiously to implement and communicate a plan.
Potential Scenarios: Condensed season; more double headers; tournament play every weekend; extending the season into June. There are many ideas and possibilities; as the situation remains fluid, HLA will continue to communicate updates as new information becomes available.
When will you make the final decision on playing out the youth season or not?
No specific "Go/No Go" Date has been set for our decision. We realize that the window of opportunity to get a season in is getting smaller and smaller. We are in the process of securing field space into the month of June in case we get back to playing. As we continue to follow the developments of the pandemic, we will work with parks and recreation, our board members, coaches and supporters to make the best decision possible with the information we have at the time we have it.
We know these are uncertain times, where some families may be anxious or even scared. We all share these sentiments, as we too have families. We want nothing more than to all return, together, to the lacrosse fields for some fun, camaraderie, and competition with friends. Thank you for your patience and support. Your emails, text messages and phone calls of encouragement have been well received and are greatly appreciated. We have never had to deal with anything like this and we are doing the best we can with what we have and what we know. HLA is a great lacrosse community and I'm excited to have you be a part of it.
On behalf of the entire Huntsville Lacrosse Association, we want to thank for putting your trust in us, and we appreciate the support of your respective team(s). We are committed to working through these challenging circumstances together. We will all get through this and I look forward to seeing everyone back on the field as soon as possible!
IF you have questions, ideas, comments, concerns, etc....please let us know!
